Who's Behind It

Growing up
on the water.

Vela's founder is a junior in high school who grew up racing on the East Coast — and we've watched too many good sails get thrown out the moment they're retired from the fleet.

Vela started as a way to keep that cloth out of the landfill. We cut around the wear and sew each piece into a drawstring bag built to be used, not admired.

No two bags are the same, because no two sails are the same. That's the point.

How a Bag Gets Made

From racing sail to drawstring bag, in four moves.

A truck bed full of retired sails
01 — RETIRED

The sail comes in

Blown out, stretched, or simply replaced — we take sails other sailors are done with.

Tracing a bag pattern onto sailcloth with a cardboard template
02 — SORTED

Panels get chosen

We inspect every panel and mark the strongest cloth to work with.

Sewing a zigzag seam on a sewing machine
03 — CUT & SEWN

Built by hand

Cut, folded, and stitched on a home machine, panel by panel.

04 — FINISHED

Drawstring & done

A cinched rope closure and a bag ready to use.

Giving Back

10% of our profit goes to Save the Sound.

We grew up on Long Island Sound, so keeping it healthy isn't optional to us. 10% of the profit from every bag we sell goes directly to Save the Sound, supporting their work protecting and restoring the waters we sail on. Learn about Save the Sound.
